We need strong defences, especially since the recent drone attack on Leipzig airport in Germany, which targeted a fully fueled aircraft near the terminal building. There is pressure on the government to increase our defence spending from within and from other countries. This does not have to be seen as a bad thing to aim for.

Defence spending can be spent wisely and for the good of our country, if the money is spent with the aim of boosting our defence industry, including replacing the large equipment shortfall that has taken place over many years as we have rightly been supporting our allies around the world.

This would stimulate the economy, create and sustain jobs here, improve the morale of the Armed Forces and make money through exports. Unless necessary, not a penny should be spent on foreign arms or so-called know-how. We have enough talent and expertise in this country. Let us make use of it.

I have seen great examples of Military Engineers working on construction projects in the UK, such as constructing cycle paths to schools near their barracks. This means that the troops are active even during long peaceful periods and have a net positive impact to local communities. These skills can be used overseas to help win hearts and minds. This maximises the benefit of having such units on standby.
