Here is another smart idea from over the pond and up a bit. Canada is converting vacant shopping centres into housing stock for their senior citizens, with their food vending areas repurposed as communal dining halls. We could do it for families as well, so there would be a better age mix. Include some halfway house care areas to help with the bed blocking in hospitals, hostels, actual corner shop-type venues and pubs too to add to the overall profit margin. This would help to ease the housing market blockage and drop their prices. Everybody benefits.

What other buildings could be converted in a similar way?

Possibly use the local Police stations that have closed near me, or office block stock that has lain dormant for decades, and that landlords get rent from; more rent for them would be good. It's easier than building from scratch. Planning permission could be eased for particular types. This would boost the trades industry. Train apprentices as you renovate them and boost employment at the same time.
